“The message for me personally is that…I feel that girls my age tend to question themselves a lot. They tend to dress and be what other people want them to be. I feel that everyone wants to follow the trends and what’s ‘cool’ and eventually, at the end of the day when you strip all of that down, are you really proud of yourself and comfortable in your skin?”
“There are moments every day when I feel insecure and not good enough. I hope that the song really inspires my fans to embrace who they are,” she added about the meaning of Who Says.
In June 2017, Selena told Elvis Duran and the Morning Show that Who Says is her favorite song.
“I’m always honest with you guys, I think in the beginning I don’t really know what a 15 or 15-year-old was going to be talking about,” Selena said.

“There wasn’t enough experience for me to understand what these words I was saying were gonna have meaning or weight. My favorite song, one of the favorite songs that I’ve ever done is still ‘Who Says,’ which I recorded when I was 16. Because of the message, that’s what I felt like I wanted to give my fan base and other than that, I don’t really know what I was doing.”
“I think I was just figuring out my voice and figuring out what was comfortable,” she added. “It wasn’t until ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’ that I had that moment where it clicked, where I realized there was such freedom in me being honest with where I was.”
“It’s like a yearbook,” she said. “You look at the pictures and you’re like, I thought I looked so good and I did not! So it’s like that feeling a little bit.”
