The Significance Behind the Ink
Ruby Rose discussed her 109 tattoos in an interview with Marie Claire Malaysia, explaining that while individually the number seems large, many are connected to form larger pieces like sleeves or back pieces.
“If you count them individually, then that’s an astronomical amount. But because they are joined together, it becomes a sleeve, or it becomes a back piece,” the Australian superstar told Marie Claire Malaysia about her 109 tattoos for her August 2018 cover story.
She emphasized that each tattoo holds a personal meaning or story designed to create lasting memories. Despite some being more significant than others, she cherishes all of them equally.
They all have personal meanings or stories — they are there to create a memory. Some of them are more meaningful than others, but I love them all.

Tattooed Symbols of Personal and Artistic Expression
One year earlier, at the premiere of her new film The Meg, we also saw the blue swallow tattooed on the back of her neck. She donned a feminine Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2018 cutout dress, Bulgari jewelry, and Stuart Weitzman shoes.

Iconic Roles and Memorable Ink
Best known for her roles in “Orange Is the New Black,” “John Wick: Chapter 2” and “Pitch Perfect 3,”, Ruby has a big portrait of American graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat on her upper left arm.
Specialty tattoo designer Jessica Mascitti Ellis inked it at the New York City tattoo parlor East Side Ink in June 2014.

The swallow is known as the bird of freedom. As a tattoo, it is a symbol used historically by sailors to show off their sailing experience.

The gender-fluid actress/model also has a neck tattoo that says, “And breathe me.” This line is from the song “Breathe Me” by Australian singer Sia, which is featured on the album Colour the Small One. Ruby got this tattoo in February 2011.
