The Rook is an American television series loosely based on the novel of the same name by Daniel O’Malley and originally adapted by Stephenie Meyer. Ordered direct-to-series by Starz in July 2017, the production saw creative shifts when Meyer left due to differences during filming the first two episodes.
The series premiered on June 30, 2019, in the United States on Starz and on July 1, 2019, in the United Kingdom on the Virgin TV Ultra HD channel. Though initially intriguing, the eight-episode miniseries received mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 44% approval rating and a critics’ consensus, noting its “dour tone and convoluted machinations” overshadowed its premise.
Starz confirmed on March 4, 2020, that the series would not continue beyond its first season. Despite its reception, The Rook follows a young woman navigating shadowy paranormal adversaries while grappling with extraordinary abilities.
