“I was on location and Rockwell was the name of a store. At the time, I remember thinking, ‘That’s a really great name,’ and I kept it in the back of my mind,” Liu told Today in July 2022 about the meaning behind her son’s name.
“I know a lot of people are like, ‘Oh, that’s a surname.’ But I think sometimes surnames are stronger than first names.”

“When he was 4, he corrected somebody. He said, ‘My name is Rockwell,’” she added about her son Rockwell Lloyd Liu, who turned seven on August 27, 2022. “But I’m sure by the time he’s in high school, people will be calling him all kinds of names.”
In an interview with CBS News, she explained why she decided to support the commodification of the womb, which treats the process of pregnancy and birth as a transaction rather than a natural and intimate experience.

“I didn’t really think about it at all,” she explained. “I just went ahead and did it … I didn’t realize there was criticism until after I sent out the information that I had my baby through a gestational carrier and my friends said, ‘Don’t listen to what some people are saying.’ I didn’t realize people were saying anything negative!”
She also talked about her decision to choose assisted reproduction in an interview with People.
“It just seemed like the right option for me because I was working and I didn’t know when I was going to be able to stop,” Liu said about her decision to pay for gestational surrogacy. “I decided that was probably the best solution for me, and it turned out to be great.”
“I didn’t realize how quickly babies progress,” she added. “Very basic things that you just take for granted. They’re just this little lump of flesh, and then all the sudden they’re turning around, they’re observing you and they’re smiling and they’re interacting. It’s a magical experience.”
