Whenever Rihanna bursts out in a heartfelt post-breakup song, I envision her in a luxurious dress full of layers and a train—you know, an old-fashioned dramatic concert outfit.
But since this is Rihanna, she was content with a printed shift Raf Simons Spring 2014 dress worn with fishnet short tights and white Comme Des Garcons platform high-top sneakers.

At least the 25-year-old pop singer is clothed, which can’t be said with the other singers of the same genre. Plus, she is fully committed to her edgy style.
The shift dress is captivating. It features a charming clover bottle print and dotted details—an ideal kitschy choice for a Rihanna performance.

Note, too, that shift dresses are increasingly popular these days. Sure, they sometimes look like oversized shirts, but there are so many ways to style them and make them look like a million bucks. Their ’60s-inspired silhouette can now be incorporated even in modern ensembles. Rihanna wore hers with a green coat (not shown in the photos).
For colder seasons, you can wear your shift dress with a similar coat, team it up with a collared top, and wear tights with it. You can wear sneakers, wedges, Mary Jane heels, or what-have-you. There’s no end to the styling possibilities.
What about you, ladies? Are you also a fan of the shift dress, just like RiRi?
