Leading the nominations at the 2020 Grammy Awards with eight nods, Lizzo kicked off the show with a tribute to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash near Calabasas earlier in the day.
Kobe and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant were among the nine killed in the crash.
“Tonight is for Kobe,” Lizzo shouted as she hit the stage in a custom Christian Siriano rhinestone-embellished black gown. She then belted out a medley of her hit singles Truth Hurts and Cuz I Love You to open the ceremony.
The same day, a Washington Post reporter was suspended after she tweeted an old article about Kobe Bryant being accused of rape. According to NBC News, Felicia Sonmez, a national political reporter for The Post, tweeted a 2016 article from Daily Beast shortly after the news of the NBA legend’s death broke.

Using Matrix products, hairstylist Shelby Swain styled Lizzo’s tresses in vintage curls with a deep side parting. He also used GHD Curve Curling iron and Matrix Total Results hairspray to create the look.
Makeup artist Alexx Mayo used Urban Decay cosmetics on Lizzo’s face. She applied metallic purple smoky eye-makeup with a dust of glitter for some sheen, false lashes, blush, and a swipe of lip gloss.
Manicurist Eri Ishizu used Christian Louboutin products on Lizzo’s nails. She painted number eight in glittery gold on each of her blush-colored nails, which was a nod to her eight nominations. The New York-based nail artist then added crystals in the same shape as her earrings at the tips of her nails.
