After misleading fans with her announcement earlier this month that she was quitting, Lizzo returned to the red carpet on Saturday for the 10th Annual Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, wearing a dramatic black gown by Quine Li.
I’m usually not a fan of Lizzo’s red carpet style, as it’s often over-the-top. Remember her MTV VMAs 2022 gown? It’s indescribable! I understand, though, that her fashion sense reflects her rather unapologetic personality.
However, her latest red carpet appearance left me speechless in a positive way. It’s avant-garde yet glamorous, and I appreciate how she adhered to the event’s theme, celebrating scientists who have made significant contributions to fundamental physics, life sciences, and mathematics.

Radiating sophistication, the four-time Grammy winner wore a bespoke black gown designed for her by Quine Li, a New York-based label founded by Chinese designer Kuai Li.
The gown, which features a fitted bodice and floor-sweeping train, is a testament to the fashion brand’s celebration of the human body as an amazing sculpture that can transform into a living work of art.
Like Katy Perry, who wore a gravity-defying black gown at the event, Lizzo donned a futuristic black dress with a dramatic strapless neckline extending past her shoulders like a wing structure. While I’m fascinated by the detail, I couldn’t help but wonder if she had struck anyone at the event with her structural dress.

Following the ceremony, the Rumors hitmaker took to Instagram to share a few snaps. “Science is sexy,” she captioned one of her posts, and “Yall not ready for this era” in another.
Honestly, I wasn’t prepared for her new look, curated by celebrity stylist couple Matthew and Reginald Reisman. But I’m excited to see what they have planned for the rapper in the future.

One of my favorite details about this ensemble is the matching opera gloves, which feature what appear to be bow embellishments on the wrists.
I also like their decision to keep her neck bare, which enhanced the look’s elegance. Matthew and Reginald Reisman accessorized Lizzo with gold ear-shaped earrings, an iconic Schiaparelli design for a touch of whimsical flair. Doja Cat wore a similar pair at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.
They also added a couple of chunky gold bangles to her left wrist before finishing the look with classic black pointed-toe pumps with high block heels from Jimmy Choo. I admire their choice to keep the footwear simple to attract attention to her gown.

I like how her glam team, makeup artist Alexx Mayo and hairstylist Ashanti Lation, complemented the outfit’s space-age vibe with a vampy beauty look.
Lation styled Lizzo’s shoulder-length raven hair in a “bouffant with a Vampire Bang,” while Mayo accentuated her eyes with mascara, winged eyeliner, and soft, smokey eyeshadow. Her drawn-on eyebrows, heavy blush, and vampy blood-red glossy lip rounded out her glam.

Lizzo Is Not Quitting the Music Scene
Apparently, Lizzo is here to stay. Earlier this month, the rapper vented out her frustrations over the “lies” that were being spread about her for “clout & views” and “being the butt of the joke every single time” because of her appearance. With her “character being picked apart by people” and “disrespecting” her name, she said she’s “tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone” and that she’s “starting to feel like the world doesn’t want” her, ending her statement with “I quit.”

Fans believed Lizzo gave up on her music career. But as it turned out, she’s merely stepping away from negativity and her detractors. Taking to her socials to clarify her statement, clad in a turquoise blue swimsuit, she said, “When I say I quit, I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention. What I am not going to quit is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting to people because I know I’m not alone.”

Lizzo’s Sexual Harassment Lawsuit
The past few months have been challenging for Lizzo. In August 2023, three of Lizzo’s backup dancers filed a case against her for sexual harassment, abuse, weight shaming, and racial discrimination—all of which she denied, saying the accusations are “unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed.”

In their initial legal response in September 2023, Lizzo and her legal team requested a Los Angeles judge to dismiss the lawsuit with prejudice.
In February 2024, Lizzo’s motion to dismiss the case entirely was denied, but Los Angeles County Superior Court judge Mark H. Epstein threw out several of the plaintiffs’ claims.
A jury trial is scheduled for the lawsuit. Attorney Ron Zambrano expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision on behalf of the plaintiffs.
He told ET: “We’re very pleased with the judge’s ruling, and we absolutely consider it a victory on balance. He did dismiss a few allegations, including the meeting where Arianna was fat-shamed, the nude photo shoot, and dancers being forced to be on ‘hold’ while not on tour.”
He added, “However, all the other claims remain, including sexual, religious and racial discrimination, sexual harassment, the demeaning visits to the Bananenbar in Amsterdam and Crazy Horse in Paris, false imprisonment, and assault. The ruling also rightfully signals that Lizzo — or any celebrity — is not insulated from this sort of reprehensible conduct merely because she is famous. We now look forward to conducting discovery and preparing the case for trial.”
