Joey King’s attendance at this year’s AFI Life Achievement Award Gala honoring Nicole Kidman made perfect sense, as the two are co-starring in the upcoming Netflix movie A Family Affair.

What didn’t quite make sense was her choice of ensemble. Although she looked amazing, I thought the dress was too provocative for the event, and it seemed like she was overshadowing the night’s honoree.
I must admit I like the dress a lot; it’s not your typical red-carpet black dress, and I think it captures Joey King’s daringly feminine yet edgy sense of style. The thing is, I find it inappropriate for the occasion.
Joey King’s Daring Take on Black Cutout Dress Trend
With a quick look, I can already tell the dress is by David Koma. One characteristic that sets David Koma apart is its body-contouring silhouettes, highlighting the feminine form. The London-based designer’s aesthetic is reflected in Joey’s slinky dress.
Although I find the cutaway bodice too daring, I love how it showcases Joey King’s feminine figure. The provocative bodice features a halter neckline with a massive cutout around the midriff and chest, showcasing her inner sideboob. It’s a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

The off-the-shoulder sleeves connected to the halter strap are a nice touch; they add a touch of sophistication to the risqué bust design.
I find the strap that goes around her neck and holds the skirt up somewhat off here. Its placement over the bodice’s cutaway sections makes it appear out of place. Also, cutting the skirt an inch shorter would have better complemented Joey King’s 5’3” height. Besides that, everything looks terrific, including the short train that follows her every step.
Mixing Glamour and Edge with Mismatch Earrings
The Kissing Booth star‘s longtime stylist, Jared Eng, curated her look for the night, and I must say, he did a fantastic job styling her.
To add a little edge to her sleek black outfit, Eng made the actress wear mismatched Milko Boyarov 925 recycled silver earrings: the Small Drop on her left and the Long Drop earring on her right, adorned with a rock crystal.
I love how Eng ditched the bracelets and decorated King’s manicured hands with a $500 silver Shaun Leane “Quill” long ring, designed to fit over the base of the wearer’s finger, across the knuckle, and on the phalanx.

Steve Piet’s young wife carried her essentials in the $995 black leather Jimmy Choo “Mini Callie” clutch bag. Crafted from nappa leather, the bag has a softly draped silhouette with a uniquely designed closure featuring a short shoulder chain connected to the bag’s body on one side and the zipped closure on the other. When the bag is closed, the chain can be worn over the shoulder or doubled up to create a wristlet by looping the chain through the ring with the tassel design.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a good look at her heels, which Jared Eng said were by Andrea Wazen.

Rena Calhoun styled Joey King’s shiny blonde tresses straight. She parted the front part to the side and tucked it behind her ears to let her beauty shine.

Joey King’s Upcoming Role in the Netflix Movie A Family Affair
Joey King is set to star as Zara, a young woman who works as an assistant for movie star Chris Cole (Zac Efron). To Zara’s surprise, her boss and mother (Nicole Kidman) develop an unexpected romance.
A Family Affair, directed by Richard LaGravenese, will be released by Netflix on June 28, 2024.
