Jessica Alba played the role of Gina Carano in the 2016 action film Mechanic: Resurrection. She was the girlfriend of a retired hitman, Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham).
To prepare for the role, Alba trained in Krav Maga, a self-defense system combining boxing, wrestling, and judo techniques.
Sam Hazeldine, who portrayed Riah Crain, humorously mentioned that he trained to avoid looking ridiculous fighting against Jason. Alba explained she chose Krav Maga for its practicality and realism in hand-to-hand combat, aiming for intense and authentic action.

On-Screen Chemistry: Alba and Statham’s Dynamic Duo
“My husband and I are both fans of Jason Statham. I love action movies and think he’s one of the best – if not the best – action stars right now,” Alba said in an interview.
“I mean, what Jason can do with his body is insane. He’s better than some stunt people that I’ve worked with. I thought it would just be fun, frankly, and such a different thing to my day-to-day.”
“I don’t know if I ever had a fear of being typecast. I’ve done comedy, drama, action, comic-book movies so I’ve made it a point to keep the work that I’ve done pretty diverse”
“I thought it was important that if I was going to be in an action movie at this point in my life, I should play a strong character, not just a victim or a damsel in distress, but someone who was tough, smart and capable.”

Embracing Physicality: Alba’s Intense Workout Routine
Alba’s trainer, Michael Margolin of Krav Maga Worldwide, praises the Israeli combat system for its dual benefits of fitness and learning practical skills. She trained with Margolin two to four times weekly, engaging in hour-long high-intensity interval sessions featuring kicking, punching, and resistance exercises.
The diverse regimen included mitt work, medicine balls, kettlebells, light weights, and other exercises like rowing, squats, and push-ups.
Alongside her fitness routine, Alba maintained a balanced diet, highlighting the importance of combining diet and exercise. In an interview with People, Margolin emphasized the value of enjoying the chosen activity to enhance commitment.
“We start with a warm-up, and then we do intervals,” Margolin said about his training program with Jessica Alba.
“We do a lot of mitt work where she’s kicking and punching various targets as strong as she can for a period of time, and then she rests for a period of time. We also mix in medicine balls, kettle bells and some light weights.”
