Born and raised in San Jose, California, Jeannie Mai comes from a multicultural background—her father, James Mai, is of Chinese-Vietnamese descent, while her mother, Olivia, is Vietnamese.

Her parents have been divorced for over twenty years, and she has an older brother named Dennis. Reflecting on her upbringing, Jeannie has said, “There are several different traits that make up a person’s identity. For me, being Vietnamese American is the entirety of who I am.”
