The artist’s latest track, “Lipstick Lover,” serves as an anthem for queer liberation and is accompanied by a decidedly NSFW music video featuring a moment where she appears topless.
In the magazine’s latest cover story, Monáe shared her newfound comfort in embracing her freedom, stating, “I’m much happier when my titties are out, and I can run around free.”

Rolling Stone also noted that Monáe had elegantly adorned her breasts with beads and mesh during the recent awards season. In the press photo for her album announcement and the cover shoot, she minimally covers her breasts with her hands.
In the same interview, Monáe discussed the inspiration behind “Lipstick Lover,” which was named Song of the Week. She revealed that the song draws from wild parties held at Wondaland West, the Los Angeles compound where she resides and records.
Monáe said, “I have a whole spreadsheet with 50 to almost 100 experiences that I had at this party. I wear red lipsticks at the parties. I’ve had moments where if me and a girl or an energy… want to engage, you’re going to see lipstick.”
“I remember how it felt when I got kissed on my neck with red lipstick. I remember how I went to bed feeling. It was a deep rouge. It wasn’t matte. I remember the way the person looked. And I was like, ‘That’s a f-cking song.’”
Monáe transformed these parties into a testing ground for new material after completing filming for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
She recalled, “I was like, ‘OK, if we have a party in spring of 2022, I want to have records ready.’ I want to honor this experience and be really specific about it. The best way to figure it out? ‘Let’s play that shit at the party.'”
Furthermore, Monáe expressed that “The Age of Pleasure” draws inspiration from the Black diaspora, encompassing her friends and a community of individuals hailing from South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, the Caribbean, Atlanta, LA, and Chicago.

She emphasized the beauty of unity in their shared Blackness and the love they manifest towards one another. Monáe noted, “People from the continent fuck around with trap from Atlanta. You know what I’m saying?”
“The Age of Pleasure” is set to be released on June 9th via Wondaland Arts Society/Atlantic Records, with pre-orders currently available. The album features the previously released single “Float.”
