This year’s Met Gala celebrated the launch of the “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” exhibit. The highly anticipated event called for avant-garde looks and bold fashion statements, and while A-list stars stepped out in their glamorous best, only a few stuck to the evening’s theme.
It’s astonishing that only a handful of celebrities opted to wear Comme des Garçons. But even more surprising is the number of bland gowns and naked dresses at the fashion gala. Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garçons are all about deconstructing the female form and established notions of beauty, so it was disappointing that most of the attendees donned pretty and utterly boring looks instead of adhering to the Japanese designer’s vision.
Fortunately, there are those who got the memo and took major sartorial risks. Among them are Rihanna, Solange Knowles, Lily Collins and Katy Perry. Helen Lasichanh also nailed the theme — and in Comme des Garçons to boot. She stepped out with husband and event co-chair Pharrell Williams, who was also clad in Comme des Garçons.

Helen caused quite a frenzy in a voluminous red structural jumpsuit that was specifically handpicked for her by Rei Kawakubo. She completed her ensemble with a blonde topknot and black boots with contrasting white toe caps. Her fall 2017 look inspired online memes and wacky comparisons, but we have nothing but respect for her commitment to the theme.
Meanwhile, Pharrell opted for a casual-cool interpretation of the theme. He wore a flannel shirt under a black motorcycle jacket adorned with Comme des Garçons motifs. The 44-year-old musician and producer also wore ripped denim jeans with “Rei” scribbled on his left leg. He finished off his look with a pair of cherry red lace-up shoes from Dr. Martens.
