Filming Ghost World: Scarlett Johansson’s Early Start

Based on Daniel Clowes’s 1993-1997 comic book, which you can buy on Amazon, the cult film premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival in 2001 when Scarlett Johansson was 16.

Filming wrapped in May 2000, when Scarlett was just 15. Born on November 22, 1984, in Manhattan, New York, she turned 16 on November 22, 2000.

Director Terry Zwigoff’s Impressions of Young Scarlett

Director Terry Zwigoff revealed that he was unaware Scarlett Johansson was only 15 years old when he hired her for Ghost World, which made filming challenging due to restrictions on her working hours.

“I didn’t find out until after I hired her that Scarlett Johansson was only 15 years old. Which means you can only work her half as much as an adult, making shooting difficult,” director Terry Zwigoff told Vanity Fair in an interview.

“They got along really well. Instant friendship. Of course, Scarlett at age 15 had the poise of someone much older. I felt that both of them could have huge careers, either as movie stars or character actresses” he added about lead actresses Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson.

“I was rather surprised that Thora didn’t do much after that, but I always thought Scarlett was a unique, eccentric person, and right for that part. She auditioned via tape from New York and didn’t seem like a bratty little kid auditioning in Beverly Hills for a TV show.”

Following her early success in Ghost World, Scarlett Johansson continued to captivate audiences with her evolving style and presence on the red carpet. Her sophisticated fashion choices have become a hallmark of her public appearances, particularly at prestigious events like the Gotham Independent Film Awards.
