Greta Gerwig is making history one after another! Having broken several records with Barbie, including the biggest opening weekend for a female-directed film, Greta Gerwig becomes the first American female director to serve as jury president at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Not only that, but at 40, she became the youngest person to take on the role since Sofia Loren, who was 31 in 1966.
As the head of this year’s competition jury, it is only fitting that Greta Gerwig puts her best fashion foot forward on the red carpet, choosing to wear stunning designer ensembles from Armani, Saint Laurent, and Maison Margiela.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival Jury
As with the previous years, jurors for this year were chosen from a diverse range of artists within the international film industry, taking into account their “body of work and respect from their peers.”
Gerwig will lead this year’s esteemed eight-member jury that will decide the winner of the festival’s highest honor, the Palme d’Or. The jury is composed of Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona, Turkish photographer and screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, Native American actress and filmmaker Lily Gladstone, French actress Eva Green, Japanese film director Hirokazu Kore-eda, Lebanese actress and director Nadine Labaki, and French actor Omar Sy.

The 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off Tuesday at the Grand Theatre Lumiere and will run through May 25. An impressive roster of celebrities is anticipated to travel to the South of France for the invitation-only festival, either to promote their upcoming movie projects or to support their fellow stars.
Not only does the Cannes Film Festival showcase the crème de la crème of cinema, but it has also established itself as one of the most glamorous gatherings in the film industry, drawing A-list stars and supermodels who never fail to spruce up the red carpet with incredible splendor.
Red Hot in Armani Prive
It’s only the second day of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, but Greta Gerwig has already been killing it on the red carpet with one amazing look after another.
Arriving at the Furiosa: A Max Max Saga premiere, Gerwig stole the spotlight in a bespoke red-hot gown by Armani Privé that rendered me speechless.

It was exquisitely cut to fit her amazing physique, beautifully highlighting every inch of her curves. I admit, I was unaware of Gerwig’s amazing figure until now, as I’m used to seeing her in dresses that engulf her form.
It’s understated, yet the striking red color alone makes a statement and conveys power appropriate for the festival’s jury president.
I love how it elegantly hugs her hips before flowing into a trumpet skirt with a short train. It has a gorgeous sweetheart neckline that plunges to her sternum, secured with crystal-adorned rounded straps.

Karla Welch, who works with Olivia Wilde, Sarah Paulson, Kristen Wiig, and America Ferrera, curated Gerwig’s look for the evening.
Although sleek, elegant heels would have looked better with the dress, Welch opted for black open-toe platform sandals.
Her gorgeous Chopard diamond necklace was a lovely addition, but a simple set of earrings would have sufficed to keep the ensemble sophisticated. She also wore a Chopard ring and a bracelet for extra glitz.
Sporting her signature messy pixie, Gerwig completed her look with black eyeliner and bold red lipstick to complement her red gown.

Radiating Power in Sequined Burgundy Saint Laurent Dress
For the opening ceremony, held in conjunction with the premiere of Le Deuxième Acte and the awarding of the Honorary Palme d’Or to Meryl Streep, Greta Gerwig exuded confidence and power in a custom Saint Laurent gown.
Gerwig’s usual red carpet looks, which frequently feature flowy, overly modest gowns that swamp her figure, aren’t my thing. However, I was impressed by this bespoke creation.
I adore the sleek column silhouette, but what sold it to me was the deep burgundy color that contrasted nicely with her flawlessly fair complexion.

Though I’m not too fond of heavily sequined dresses, I love the fluid effect they create. Greta’s lavishly embellished burgundy gown creates the illusion of wine dripping over her figure. It’s sensual, and I’m glad she came out of her comfort zone to embrace her feminine curves.
She exposed her legs and cleavage in the dress’s daringly high center front slit and sternum-deep plunging V-neckline, which is something Greta doesn’t often do.
The long sleeves with slightly padded shoulders and the floor-sweeping hem counterbalanced the gown’s daring elements.

I commend her stylist, Karla Welch, for putting together Greta’s Cannes opening ceremony look, which she teamed with Saint Laurent’s “Dune” slingback pumps.
These beautiful burgundy patent leather shoes, which retail for $1,090 at Mytheresa, are crafted in Italy and pair flawlessly with her burgundy gown. I like every little detail about these shoes, from their tall spool heels to their tortoiseshell buckles and narrow, elongated toes.
Her opulent Chopard diamonds gave the ensemble even more glitz without going overboard. She wore just a pair of pear-shaped diamond drop earrings and a statement ring, leaving her neck bare.

Not to mention, her glam team did a great job matching her gown to her beauty look. John D. slicked her short hair to the side and created a textured wet look, while Jenn Streicher gave her a smokey jewel-toned makeup appearance using Charlotte Tilbury cosmetics.
To give her an even complexion, she used the Airbrush Flawless Finish in Shade 1, the Flawless Filter Foundation in Shade 2, and the Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer in Shade 2 Fair. She applied the Cheek to Cheek Blush in Love is the Drug and the Filmstar Bronze & Glow in Light to Medium to add a beautiful glow.
Moving on to Greta’s dramatic eye makeup, Streicher used the Eyeshadow Palette in The Vintage Vamp, the Rock n Khol Eyeliner Pencil in Bedroom Black, and the Eyes to Mesmerise in Walk of Shame. Her look was completed with a swipe of the Lip Cheat Lip Pencil in Iconic Nude and the Pillow Talk Lipstick in Pillow Talk Medium.

Looking Fresh in Blue-and-White Striped Maison Margiela
Kicking off Tuesday’s 77th Cannes Film Festival, Greta opted for a fresh look for the jury photocall, wearing a blue-and-white striped dress straight off Maison Margiela’s Spring 2024 Haute Couture collection.
Despite its rather carefree appearance, this is the perfect ensemble for a photocall on the French Riviera. Its breezy tea-length silhouette and striped design evoke French elegance!
I have to say, the dress has a lot going on, but I love how it highlights Greta’s proportions, which is a departure from the filmmaker’s typical red carpet style.

The dress is held in place by pleated, thick shoulder straps. It has a flattering corset-style bodice with ruching and seaming at the breast and waist. The sides’ ombre appearance creates the illusion of a smaller waist before flaring into an airy, tea-length skirt that falls to her mid-calves.
Continuing with the summery feel of the look, Greta, with the help of her stylist Karla Welch, opted to pair the look with white shoes.
Though I would have preferred to see the dress with open-toe sandals for a more summery vibe, the hoof shoes were a fascinating accent, giving the classic striped dress design a whimsical touch.
These shoes are one of the six haute couture silhouettes created by Maison Margiela’s Creative Director, John Galliano, in collaboration with Christian Louboutin for the 2024 Artisanal Collection.

They combine the classic Tabi toe split design from Maison Margiela with the recognizable red sole from Louboutin, all completed with chunky platforms and block heels.
With her pixie blonde hair styled in a side sweep and her delicate pink makeup, her glam also appears youthful.
