Leave it to Beyoncé — and only Beyonce — to set a new social media record without even trying. Queen Bey absolutely owned the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards by casually announcing her pregnancy.

Her announcement set a new Twitter record, hitting a max of 8,868 tweets per second at 10:35 p.m. EST on August 28. It’s the highest number of tweets per second (TPS) ever recorded for a single event.

Before her performance of “Love on Top,” a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé for her fourth studio album 4, she told the audience, “I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside me.”

After the song, she unbuttoned her coat to reveal her five-month baby bump, which set off a record-breaking tweeting frenzy.

“Last night at 10:35pm ET, Beyonce’s big MTV #VMA moment gave Twitter a record bump: 8,868 Tweets per second,” Twitter confirmed through an official account.

According to TechCrunch, the previous record for Tweets per Second took place during the final moments of the U.S. women’s soccer team’s game against Japan in July, with 7,196 Tweets per second.

Beyonce, of course, dressed well for the momentous occasion in a beautiful one-shouldered Lanvin gown from the designer’s Fall 2011 collection.

She accessorized with dazzling Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and opulent Rene Caovilla sandals.

The American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress donned a modified version of the iconic Rene Caovilla sandals.

While Beyonce’s design has higher platforms and back heel straps, both designs feature the same opulent strap designs across the top and sides.

Those designs feature polished mother-of-pearl beads laced in between shiny ivory threads and lined with sparkling Swarovski crystals.

These shoes also feature metallic leather, silk satin insteps, and glittery outsoles.
