The original gown – a stunning silk dress cut on the bias featuring a mermaid-like silhouette, lace-trimmed long sleeves, and a sexy lace-trimmed illusion back fastened by a million buttons – was designed by Carolina Herrera and cost a whopping $35,000 to create.
The Making of an Icon: Carolina Herrera’s Vision
Herrera was personally contacted by Stephenie Meyer, the author of the series, for this project. Inspired by Meyer’s book and the wedding description within, Herrera, a fan of the series’ romantic themes, felt flattered to contribute to such a pivotal scene.
“I was called by Stephenie Meyer. We had to discuss a lot, but I was very inspired by her book and the description of the wedding,” Herrera said. “I was very flattered I was asked to do it; it’s a big scene for me.”
Herrera emphasized the uniqueness of designing wedding dresses, noting the importance of satisfying the bride and maintaining the gown’s secrecy until the wedding day. She approached Kristen Stewart’s character, Bella, as she would any bride, focusing on the emotional significance of the dress.

Word has it that the designer will sell the gown in her 2012 Collection. But for those who want the dress but can’t afford to shell out $35,000, the $799 replica is a good option.
It’s a very close copy with only minor differences, like using liquid satin instead of silk and a different type of lace for the trim.
