The 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off on May 15, 2013, with a dazzling opening ceremony and the highly anticipated premiere of The Great Gatsby at the iconic Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.
Known as one of the year’s most glamorous events, the festival drew Hollywood’s biggest stars, each bringing their fashion A-game to the red carpet. Yet, as with any high-profile event, some looks dazzled while others missed the mark.
Let’s dive into the standout hits and unfortunate misses from Day 1 of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
1. Fashion Hit: Nicole Kidman Stuns in Dior Pumps at Cannes 2013
Nicole Kidman wowed the crowd in a Dior Haute Couture dress and pink patent leather pumps. She kept her look simple and clean with red lips, minimal accessories, and a tight ponytail. The Australian and American actress looked feminine and stylish in her ensemble. Nicole was a hit in our eyes!

2. Red Carpet Miss: Julianne Moore’s Silver Sandals Choice
The strappy sandals alone are fabulous. On Julianne Moore, though, they were a fashion disaster. Oh, Julianne, if only you had worn a long dress.

3. Elegant Choice: Freida Pinto’s Gucci “Phoebe” Sandals Shine
The ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ star, Freida Pinto, was a vision in her pink Gucci dress with a gold belt. We were more drawn to her gold embellished sandals from the same label. They were a great match to her gorgeous gown. Like Nicole Kidman, she tied her hair up and kept her makeup simple.

4. Style Miss: Ludivine Sagnier’s Peep-Toe Bow Pumps Fall Flat
We hate it when such beautiful women wear bad outfits, and Ludivine Stagnier, a French actress and model, was guilty of this. With such a gorgeous body, we’re not sure why she didn’t show it off with a more form-fitting dress.

Her shimmery peep-toe pumps with large bows were not the best choice for the dress either. What do you think?

5. Cannes Glamour: Paz Vega’s Stunning Ferragamo D’Orsay Pumps
Sheer dresses are typically hard to pull off, but the sultry Spanish star did it. Paz Vega looked sexy and sophisticated in her Roberto Cavalli dress.
Her Ferragamo champagne satin pumps also complemented the outfit perfectly. The shoes are from Salvatore Ferragamo’s Red Carpet Collection and are made to order.

6. Questionable Choice: Zhang Ziyi’s Louboutins for Cannes
Zhang Ziyi’s outfit looked great — just not for the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. It would be perfect for a regular movie night or dinner.

However, her striped Christian Louboutin “Pivichic” pumps are still a hit to us. We wish she wore them with a more formal dress. Don’t you?

7. Retro Glam: Sarah Marshall’s Nude T-Strap Sandals
Sarah Marshall, a British actress, was subtle and elegant at the event. She went for a 1920s-inspired dress paired with nude t-strap heels. We love how sweet and feminine she looked. What do you think of her choice?

8. Underwhelming Look: Bai Ling’s Black Peep-Toe Pumps
Bai Ling was not the worst dressed on our list, but we’ve gotten used to seeing her in edgier outfits and colorful footwear.

This time, she toned her look down by wearing a sequined dress paired with black platform peep-toe pumps. This was one instance where we wish she had stepped it up. What about you?
