Dakota Johnson is starting to embrace method dressing for the press tour of her first superhero movie, Madame Web, which opens in theaters on February 14, Valentine’s Day.
After wowing her fans with her Madame Web-inspired Annie’s Ibiza outfit at the Vogue Brazil Ball in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, Johnson flew back to New York City to resume her press tour for the fourth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU).

The Fifty Shades actress made a fashion statement on Wednesday by donning two chic ensembles that alluded to her new role.
Exploring the Concept of Method Dressing
Method dressing isn’t exactly new. It’s a fashion technique in which actors dress like the characters they portray or incorporate elements from their movies or shows into their looks.
For instance, Zendaya wore a custom spiderweb dress at the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. In addition, she has been dressing on theme while promoting her most recent movie, Dune: Part Two. Jenna Ortega also adopted method dressing during her Wednesday promotional tour in 2022. Last year, Margot Robbie fully embraced method dressing by emulating Barbie in various Barbie-inspired outfits. And for her new FX series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, Demi Moore donned a swan-like gown.
Madame Web’s Influence on Dakota’s Wardrobe
During her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Dakota Johnson gave another sartorial nod to Madame Web by wearing a form-fitting black dress with embroidered spider-web-like patterned lace by Tom Ford.
The Persuasion actress, 34, stunned in the $2,990 openwork stretch viscose maxi dress that accentuated her curves, showcasing her unique and bold sense of style. The daring see-through effect offset the modest turtleneck, long sleeves, and ankle-length skirt, keeping it from looking basic.
Outside the studio, she sported a chic black leather jacket from Gucci’s Spring 2024 collection to keep her warm.

Accessorizing the Look: From Boots to Jewelry
Dakota cleverly layered a black bodysuit underneath her provocative dress to preserve her modesty. In addition, she wore a pair of black leather Bottega Veneta thigh-high boots instead of pants, adding an edge to the ensemble and toning down her daring appearance.
The “Canalazzo,” available for $3,000 at Matches Fashion, is made in Italy from smooth calfskin leather with lambskin lining. It has a medial zip, a rubber-injected leather outsole, and a curved heel that illustrates the house’s sculptural vision.

Her cherry red Gucci “Jackie Notte” Spring 2024 bag, which matched her red-framed rectangular sunglasses from the same collection, was another subtle reference to her on-screen character.
A pair of 0.20-carat diamond and blackened gold gypset hoop earrings and 1-carat heart-shaped diamond and blackened gypset hoop earrings by Jessica McCormack added subtle shimmer to Johnson’s black ensemble.
She also adorned her fingers with a large Gumball ring by Irene Neuwirth and a $17,500 Verdura “Night” band ring inspired by the iconic cufflinks the American jeweler created in 1939 for his friend, composer Cole Porter.

A Splash of Red on the Today Show
Dakota Johnson stayed true to the movie’s theme for her earlier appearance on the Today show by dressing in a bright red Carolina Herrera ensemble paired with a brown Loewe coat.
Jumping on the red bandwagon, The Lost Daughter star tucked a Pre-Fall 2024 red knit mock-neck top with short sleeves into matching high-waisted red wide-leg trousers.
She bundled up in the $7,750 Loewe Pleated Coat crafted in medium-weight mellow nappa lambskin leather, which she took off during the show. This masculine double-breasted coat featured a relaxed fit, notched lapels, front pleats, diagonal welt pockets, and a back vent.

Dakota, daughter of successful Hollywood actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, added height to her look with the Loeffler Randall “Rivka” platform sandals.
Crafted of cacao brown kid suede, these retro-style open-toe sandals feature a caged upper with knotted detail and an adjustable buckled ankle strap, elevated by a 1.5-inch platform and 5-inch block heel.
At Nordstrom, these platform sandals are now on sale for $168.75 (from $450).

Complementing Accessories and Makeup
Dakota kept her accessories cohesive, teaming her brown heels with Jacques Marie Mage’s “Sartet Havana” sunglasses in tortoiseshell and the acorn-colored Bottega Veneta “Sardine” small leather tote bag.
Available in brown for $4,200 at Mytheresa, this intricately woven bag showcases the Italian luxury fashion house’s artful Intrecciato weaving technique and features a fish-shaped top handle, hence its name.
