In 2016, Rooney Mara starred in the Irish film The Secret Scripture. The psychological drama film tells the story of Roseanne McNulty, a woman who has been institutionalized for 35 years.
The Secret Scripture was originally set to be directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan and to star Jessica Chastain, Vanessa Redgrave, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Jeremy Irons.

Jim Sheridan then took over as director. In August 2014, Theo James, Eric Bana, and Jack Reynor joined the cast. The film’s score was composed by Brian Byrne.
Not based on a true story, The Secret Scripture is based on a 2008 novel written with the same name by Irish writer Sebastian Barry. It won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and is available on Amazon.
