Following the commercial and critical success of the 2019 dark comedy mystery film Knives Out, which grossed $311.4 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, Netflix purchased the rights to produce two Knives Out sequels for $469 million, with director Rian Johnson and lead star Daniel Craig returning to the franchise.
According to Variety, Daniel Craig will receive over $100 million to star in the two sequels to Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out.” Nearly three years after Knives Out was released, movie fans finally get a standalone sequel.

Officially titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the movie features a star-studded cast and a new murder mystery case set in Greece. It is scheduled for a one-week limited theatrical release on November 23 before its streaming release on December 23 by Netflix.
The Meaning Behind the Name “Glass Onion”
When director Rian Johnson revealed that the Knives Out sequel would be titled Glass Onion, it left many fans puzzled. In an interview with Netflix Tudum, Johnson explained that the title was inspired by The Beatles’ 1968 song “Glass Onion.”

“I’m always fishing for something fun that Blanc can grab onto as an overwrought metaphor that he can beat to death,” he explained.
“This is all in plain sight from the very start. So, the idea of glass came to me, something that’s clear. I’ll be very honest. I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word glass. ‘There’s got to be some good glass songs.’ I was like, ‘Oh, is it glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is it a glass man?’ The first thing that came up, because I’m a huge Beatles fan, is ‘Glass Onion.’”
What to Expect from Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a standalone sequel to the 2019 dark comedy mystery Knives Out. It follows detective Benoit Blanc to Greece as he solves a new murder mystery during tech billionaire Miles Bron’s getaway with his friends on his private Greek island.

Daniel Craig is reprising his role as Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion. The film also stars Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, Ethan Hawke, and Kate Hudson in an ensemble cast.
How Glass Onion Expands on Benoit Blanc’s Character
Director Rian Johnson revealed more details about what the fans can expect from the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
He told Tudum that while Benoit Blanc was “almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure” in Knives Out, fans will “definitely get to know him a little bit better” in the upcoming whodunnit sequel.
“In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was a threat,” he explained.

“Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”
