Luckily, no one actually wore a swan dress or went Cher on us this year:
CHER at the 72nd Academy Awards Vanity Fair Party Los Angeles (March 26, 2000) and Bjork shown in her “swan dress” at the 73rd Academy Awards Ceremony Los Angeles (March 25, 2001)
However, there were still some looks at the 2010 Academy Awards that didn’t quite get what they were going for. Competition for Best Dressed was also especially tough, so to go out in these dresses compared with those fully-prepared celebs will explain why I think these weren’t relatively up to par.
They’re all still very lovely, but here are my 5 worst dressed celebs at the 2010 Oscars.
#1 Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, Oscars, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 7, 2010
I know what you’re thinking – Cameron Diaz looked positively divine in this Oscar de la Renta. The only beef I have with it is that it unfortunately looks too much like Miley Cyrus’ Jenny Packham dress. It’s the same champagne color, the same strapless design, and the same sparkly fabric. I can’t help but compare the almost-40 actress to the much younger Miley and suddenly, the vibrant Cameron Diaz looks much too old for this kind of dress.
#2 Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart in Monique Lhullier at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, Oscars, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 7, 2010
Separately, Kristen Stewart and that midnight blue Monique Lhullier dress are gorgeous. Kristen’s skin is luminous and she’s thankfully growing out her hair, and the Monique Lhullier dress with a sweetheart neckline is glorious. But together, they look kind of… bland. Kristen hardly smiles, but she’s looking especially surly here. The dress isn’t in the style the actress prefers and it would probably look better on someone older with more pronounced curves.
#3 Carey Mulligan
Carey Mulligan in Prada at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, Oscars, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 7, 2010
All bets were on Carey Mulligan wearing Prada to the Oscars, and that’s exactly what we got last Sunday. Carey went all out in Prada, from her dress, her clutch, down to her strappy heels.
Her wearing one brand from head to toe wasn’t what landed Carey on this worst dressed list. It was the hem of her dress. The dress itself looks stunning from the hip up, but that asymmetrical hem that falls just right at the calf (the thickest part of the leg!) makes the petite actress look short.
If Carey Mulligan insists on wearing a hem like that, then perhaps she could’ve traded those heels with something that doesn’t have straps that cut across the foot. A shoe that bares the top of the foot and the ankles will give the illusion of a longer leg.
#4 Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron in Dior at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, Oscars, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 7, 2010
You’d think a blond bombshell with a Christian Dior contract could do no wrong, but Charlize Theron sadly disappoints. Those roses on her breasts are all I could look at and the two-tone lavender color isn’t helping to draw away attention to something else.
Maybe the roses could be on the shoes instead of the dress?
#5 Diane Kruger
Diane Kruger in Chanel at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, Oscars, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 7, 2010
Normally, Diane Kruger would be able to pull off a quirky dress with a ruffle collar like this one from Chanel. But coupled with that chaotic skirt and that unnecessary black band around the knees, everything just ended up looking like one hot mess.
