High Heels Take Their Toll: Sarah Jessica Parker’s Journey to Comfort Footwear
In a 2013 interview with Net-a-Porter’s online magazine, Sarah Jessica Parker revealed she’s opting for sneakers over high heels, following her doctor’s advice.
“For ten or so years, I literally ran in heels. I worked 18-hour days and never took them off. I wore beautiful shoes, some better made than others, and never complained,” the actress said.
After spraining her ankle during the filming of I Don’t Know How She Does It, where she intentionally wore less expensive shoes to stay true to her character as a working mom, Sarah Jessica Parker sought medical attention.
The foot doctor delivered unexpected news, telling her that her foot had undergone unusual stress and formation due to years of wearing high heels.
“I went to a foot doctor and he said, ‘Your foot does things it shouldn’t be able to do. That bone there…. You’ve created that bone. It doesn’t belong there.’ The moral of the story is, the chickens are coming home to roost. It’s sad, because my feet took me all over the world, but eventually they were like, ‘You know what, we are really tired, can you just stop — and don’t put cheap shoes on us?’”

The Genesis and Growth of SJP By Sarah Jessica Parker
Best known for her role on the television series Sex and the City (1998–2004), Sarah Jessica Parker also had her own shoe line, SJP By Sarah Jessica Parker.
In August 2024, she announced that the SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker brand would cease operations in the fall of 2024, after 10 years in business. The footwear and accessories brand was launched in 2014 by Sarah Jessica Parker and George Malkemus III, former president of Manolo Blahnik.
SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker became renowned for its stylish, high-quality shoes, reflecting Parker’s aesthetic. SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker was praised by critics and consumers alike, and it quickly became a favorite among fashion-forward women.
The brand’s shoes, made from high-quality materials such as leather and suede, were available in various styles, including pumps, flats, sandals, and boots, and in various colors. SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker also offered a variety of accessories, such as handbags, jewelry, and scarves.

Comfort, Style, and Sustainability: The Vision Behind SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker
The brand prioritized crafting shoes that seamlessly blended style and comfort. Drawing from her own experiences with persistent foot pain, Sarah Jessica Parker recognized the need for footwear that is both beautiful and supportive. SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker was designed with all-day wear in mind, ensuring elegance without sacrificing comfort.
The brand was also committed to sustainability. The shoes were made in Italy from ethically sourced materials, and the brand strived to reduce its environmental impact.
In February 2014, Katie Couric interviewed Sarah Jessica Parker about what motivated her to launch her own shoe brand.
Earlier opportunities never seemed right. I kept saying, “This just isn’t what I imagined.” If I’m going to ask people for their hard-earned dollars, I’d better be making shoes I want to wear. About a year ago, I was about to sign with this big company, and I was hemming and hawing. I realized my real dream was a smaller line, my name, built in Europe, at a reasonable price point. Beautiful, simple shoes, the kind I remember from when I first came to New York – the Maud Frizons, the Charles Jourdans. And the person I would most like to partner with was George Malkemus, who runs the Manolo Blahnik brand. But I thought, well he’s kind of otherwise engaged. Still, I called him and said “George, I have this crazy idea.” And he said, “Be at my office tomorrow.”
