“The Bridge” features Diane Kruger in a leading role as Sonya Cross, an El Paso detective with a unique perspective due to her Asperger’s Syndrome.
Developed by Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid, this American crime drama aired for two seasons on FX. It was adapted from the Danish-Swedish series Bron/Broen. The series unfolds on the U.S.-Mexican border, centered around the Bridge of the Americas that links El Paso with Juárez.

Sonya Cross: A Unique Character in Television
Diane Kruger’s portrayal of Sonya was a significant departure from typical roles offered to women in cinema, particularly those depicting characters with Asperger’s, who are often relegated to minor or comedic parts. Kruger noted the rarity of such film roles and highlighted television as a medium providing more substantial and leading roles for women.
“As soon as I started reading up on it, I realized that this was a really daunting undertaking because it’s not something you can just put on. It’s a mind frame that I have to put myself into every day,” she told THR. “There’s not one single line in the dialogue that’s just a straight-up line.”
To ensure an authentic representation, the production included an autism consultant, Alex Plank. He was involved in script reviews and on-set advice. This underscored the show’s commitment to a respectful and accurate portrayal of its characters’ complexities. Despite positive reviews and critical success, the series was not renewed after a significant drop in viewership in the second season.
